Rock Climbing

The history of rock climbing can be traced back more than 200 years, when scientists (botanists and geologists), farmers and miners scaled the peaks and cliffs searching for new specimens, lost sheep and minerals. Climbs have been recorded as far back as 1798 when the Reverends Bingley and Williams ascended the Eastern Terrace on Clogwyn D’ur Arddu searching for plant specimens. The next 100 years were characterised by continued exploration of the mountains and cliffs, summiting the peaks by a number of different routes. In 1886 W. P. Haskett Smith climbed Napes Needle in the Lake District , an ascent which is often described as the ‘birth of rock climbing’. The United Kingdom is one of the worlds finest rock climbing destinations, due to both the quality of the rock and the huge variety of rock types. There are small crags where skills and techniques can be developed before tackling some of the longer lines on the mountain crags and sea cliffs.
